maxit Launch New Facility To Strengthen UK Presence

Fast-expanding construction products company maxit has officially opened an all-new processing and distribution facility to meet increasing UK demand for its innovative portfolio of materials.

The new facility, based at Associated British Ports' (ABP) Port of Garston, Merseyside, will process and package large volumes of maxit's lightweight aggregate (LWA), which is imported from the multi-national company's operations in Spain and Portugal.

The facility, officially opened by Maria Eagle, MP for Liverpool Garston, features Italian-designed state-of-the-art automated packaging machinery, which bags the LWA before palletising and shrink wrapping it ready for distribution throughout the UK.

Uniquely, the vast majority of maxit LWA remains in its packaging when put to use on site, providing both infill and insulation for a wide variety of applications including home extensions, under refurbished floors in social housing and for conservatory floors.

maxit has been importing LWA through ABP Garston since 2002. Spiralling demand for the conveniently packaged bagged product, particularly from local authorities, housing associations, building contractors and conservatory installers has triggered the latest investment.

Each ship visiting the ABP-maxit terminal on the docks delivers 5,000 cubic metres of LWA, which is transported just 400 yards to the new facility, where it is coated prior to the packaging process. The new plant has the capacity process up to 1,200 15kg bags per hour, providing the capacity for up to one million bags per year.

The new facility comprises 13,000 sq m of open and undercover storage including 1,000 sq m of indoor processing and storage space, will also be used for the stockholding and distribution of advanced flooring and façade systems from maxit's operations in Scandinavia and Germany. It will eventually also house maxit's quality control and training centre for its wide range of products.

Comments maxit's UK Managing Director Chris Mahony: "The new facility is ideally situated both for our administrative headquarters in Runcorn and centrally for the distribution of maxit's growing portfolio of products throughout the UK.

"We've been able to invest in the very best equipment and expertise from throughout Europe, including state-of-the art packaging plant from Italy, solids handling plant from Denmark and engineering services from Merseyside to install and maintain the plant, so it's been a truly multi-national operation."

"I'm immensely proud of the hard work put in by all my colleagues and supply chain partners to see this investment come to fruition, both for ourselves and ABP, and feel sure that we will all reap the rewards in the years to come."
